Online Learning Guidelines For Instructors

Frequently Asked Questions

Much of what we expect from our Online Learning instructors, you already do for your regular class. OL instructors should plan to comply with the following practices:

  • Classroom capture: Take measures to ensure that the COL classroom capture is complete and of high quality. Also write legibly and use the Mimio equipment effectively.

  • Communication: Promptly respond to all correspondence; particularly e-mail correspondence, but also including voice mail correspondence, from both online students and in-class students. You should be at least as accessible to online students as you are to regular students. This includes office hours and correspondence.
In addition, it may be helpful to require your students to regularly correspond with you via e-mail or online discussion forums. This way you know that the student is on track, and the student knows that you’re paying attention. Student feedback has suggested that online students feel more a part of the class when regular communication is required.

  • Homework submissions: Accept electronic submission of assignments from online students. A homework submission system is provided as part of COL’s course management system COLWeb. This submission system is available to both your online and in-class students. E-mail submission of assignments is also acceptable.

  • Presentations and exams: Allow some flexibility in the administration of presentations and exams for your online course. The majority of our online students are limited by time, if not physical distance from campus.
View our general exam guidelines and make-up procedures. In case of presentations, remote students should be offered an alternative project or method of presentation.

  • Course documents: Post all handouts and other materials distributed in class online. You may post them to your course website, but we encourage you to use the “Documents” section of COL’s course management application COLWeb.
If you choose not to use COLWeb for your course materials, put the link to your course homepage into your syllabus. All courses must either use COLWeb or an external homepage.

Follow the guidelines published in “Distance Education, Guidelines for Good Practice” (American Federation of Teachers, May 2000)
