Frequently Asked Questions

Applies to:
Students; Online Students; Faculty
Q: I forgot my password, what should I do?
A: Please note that we are NOT responsible for Campus Connection password inquiries since the password information is not stored in our system. If you forget your Campus Connection password, please go to the Campus Connection website and click the link "Forgot your password?" or go to ID Card services for further help.
Q: Can I have online students work on group projects?
A: Certainly, as long as the projects don't necessarily require students to all be in one place at the same time. The course management application COLWeb of Course OnLine offers collaboration tools such as e-mail, discussion forums, wikis, etc. that you can make available to your students. However, if you can't see how students living in different parts of the country would be able to complete the group project, then it may be a good idea to offer an alternative assignment to those students.
Q: Why don't I see my courses listed under "My Current Courses"?
A: It takes about 24 hours for the COLWeb database to reflect new registrations. If it has been more than 24 hours since you registered and you don't see your course listed under "My Current Courses", please go to the COLSupport website and submit an error report.
Q: How do I login to COLWeb?
A: You will log in to COLWeb at http://col.cti.depaul.edu by using the same username and password you use to access Campus Connection. Once you are successfully logged in you will see a list of your current and previous courses and a menu with available options to the left side.
Q: How do I get my Campus Connection ID and password?
A: If you’re a local student living in any of the counties listed in this handbook, you need to go to one of the ID Services offices on campus. Online Students located outside these five counties should contact OL Staff.
Q: Do I have to watch the lecture recordings at a certain time?
A: No. The recording of your class will be available online within 6 to 12 hours after the regular class session. You can then watch it any time.
Q: How soon after class are lecture recordings available online?
A: Typically, your class recordings will be available online within 6-12 hours after the actual in-class lecture.
Q: Is the online section of a course going to be taught separately?
A: No. The instructor that is teaching the in-class section of a COL-enabled course will also teach the online section. The in-class section is held on-campus and is recorded for online students to view.
Q: Will I have to come to campus for exams?
A: Check your course syllabus for exam dates and instructions. If you are a local student and an exam is given in class, you will need to come to one of DePaul’s Campuses on exam night to take the test. Distant students must make arrangements for a proctor at a local college or university. For more information about exam procedures click here.
Q: Can I choose the campus where I will take my exams?
A: The time and location of your exam will be provided to you prior to the exam date. However, if you have a legitimate conflict that prevents you from taking the exam at the scheduled time, it may be possible to arrange a make-up exam. With instructor permission and adequate notice, it may also be possible to arrange to take your exam at one of DePaul’s suburban campuses, but these arrangements will be made on a case-by-case basis. Please see your syllabus for your instructor’s policy on make-up exams.
Q: I can’t travel to Chicago for exams. What are my options?
A: If you are a remote student registered for an Online Learning class, you will need to arrange for a proctor at a local college or university. You are responsible for making these arrangements in advance of your exam. You are also responsible for any fees charged by the proctor.
Q: How will I turn in my homework?
A: Ask your instructor. Most types of homework can be submitted through COLWeb, Course OnLine's course management application that will be provided for your instructor’s use. However, your instructor may prefer that you e-mail or fax your homework instead.
Q: How long will each week’s lecture recording be available online?
A: Once a class lecture is recorded and posted, it will be available for review the rest of the term. You should plan to stay current with your courses however, because assignments and due dates will follow the regular class schedule.
Q: If I have trouble with the recording, can I come to class?
A: In short, No. Except for exams (mentioned above) online students are not allowed to come to class. In many cases classrooms are full and extra online students would displace students registered for the in-class section. If you are able to attend class you should register for the in-class section. Note that students in the in-class section of an COL-enabled course have access to the same recordings and materials as online students.
Q: What is the average time I should allow for online students to take the exam?
A: Typically the dates assigned for online students start on the same day as the in-class section and the dates range from 3 to 7 days. You might want to make sure that there is a weekend within your exam timeline. This way, students who work long hours during the week are covered.
