Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the average time I should allow for online students to take the exam?

A: Typically the dates assigned for online students start on the same day as the in-class section and the dates range from 3 to 7 days. You might want to make sure that there is a weekend within your exam timeline. This way, students who work long hours during the week are covered.

The CDM OL Staff provides logistical support for paper and pencil exams required in Online Learning courses. This support includes overseeing the scheduling process and managing the scheduling system, distributing remote exams, proctoring loop exams, and returning completed exams to instructors.

The flow chart provided on this page shows the basic scheduling process, which is accomplished largely through the scheduling system of COLWeb. In order to make the process run as smoothly as possible, we ask the following:

  • You should post your exam dates as early as possible in the quarter. Early notification helps ease the scheduling demands faced by the typical online student.

  • You should provide a reasonably accessible exam window. Remember that many proctors are not available on Sundays, and many students are not available during weekday business hours. An exam window of four to seven days including a Saturday is typical, though ultimately, the length of the window is left to your discretion.

  • You should remind your students that information about exam scheduling, including resources for finding a proctor, is available on the COL Documentation website.
