A proctor is an impartial monitor who administers a student's exam and ensures the security and integrity of the exam process.

If you live outside the Chicago land area and your instructor is giving exams, you will need to find a proctor. If you have a take home exam or a final project, you will not need a proctor. Check your course syllabus on COLWeb to find out if you need a proctor.

As a remote student you are responsible for finding your own proctor. Contact your local public library, community college or university or, if you are in the military, contact your education officer. Start by asking if the facility has experience in proctoring exams.

Please note that some testing centers require that exams be scheduled several weeks in advance. These arrangements should be made as soon as possible. If you have trouble finding an Acceptable Proctor in your area, please e-mail the OL Staff .

You will need to provide the following contact information for your proctor:

  • Name
  • Title
  • Institution
  • Street Address
  • Phone
  • Fax
  • E-mail Address
  • Website

We will ask your proctor to fax your completed exam to a toll-free fax number prior to mailing it. You must ensure that your proctor is able to return the completed exam this way or through some other electronic means. This restriction is necessary to guarentee the efficient grading and return of exams. You are responsibe for any fees incurred with the administration of your exam, including postage to return the exam. Please, be aware that you may be charged a fee by your proctor. Fees vary among colleges, universities, and private testing centers. Once we recieve the information about your proctor, we will verify your proctor and explain to them the procedures we ask them to follow.
