Here are some terms and definitions of acronyms that you'll commonly hear around DePaul CDM:
CIM: School of Cinema and Interactive Media.
CDM: College of Computing and Digital Media.
COL: Course OnLine, CDM's lecture playback system brings the unique experience of an on campus DePaul CDM education to online students, and gives them flexibility in how, when, and where they learn.
COL-enabled Course: Course that is using the Course OnLine system. This course contains two sections, an in-class on-campus section and an online section.
COLPlayer: The stand-alone lecture playback application is used with Windows operating systems to view recorded lectures. The application allows students to stream when connected to the Internet, or view a downloaded version if not connected to the Internet. The student must download software to his or her computer to use this application.
COLWeb: The COL Course Management System is an online learning environment where students participate in their courses, interact with their instructors, and collaborate with their classmates.
Flash Player - The COL Flash Player is a web based player for viewing COL recordings. Based on flash technology, it can be used by Windows, Mac and Linux users. The recording is viewed through the Web browser, and no software needs to be downloaded to the student’s machine.
MyCDM – A Web interface where students find personalized academic schedule and course information for CDM courses, programs, and academic progress towards their degree. MyCDM can be accessed by clicking the MyCDM link off the CDM home page at http://www.cdm.depaul.edu.
OL: Online Learning.
Online Section: Students watch recorded lectures online at their convenience. Some online sections may have the option to attend a virtual real-time session of the class via Wimba software. Online students schedule proctored exams at the Loop, branch campus, or with an approved proctor.
Online Student: A student enrolled in an online section of a course. (A student may change from being an online or on-campus student for every class).
On-Campus Student: A student enrolled in an on-campus section of the course. (A student may change from being an online to on-campus student for every class).
On-Campus Section: Students are expected to attend on-campus sessions of the course but are able to use the recorded lectures for review. Students take exams in the normal class session.
SoC: School of Computing.
Streaming: Streaming audio and video is content sent in compressed form over the Internet and displayed by the viewer in real time. With streaming media, a student does not have to wait to download a file to play it. Instead, the media is sent in a continuous stream of data and is played as it arrives.
