2ND ANNUAL LGBTQA MONTH AT DEPAUL UNIVERSITY

SCHEDULED EVENTS[1]

 

1.      Event Title:                                  Kick-Off Breakfast with Key Note Speaker

Gary W. Harper, PhD, MPH

Event Description:                      DePaul University community members and friends are invited to come together to launch the 2nd Annual LGBTQA Month.  A blessing from University Ministry, an official welcome from a representative from Student Affairs, and a key note address from Dr. Gary Harper, Director of the Master of Public Health Program and Professor in the Department of Psychology are among the event’s highlights. 

 

2.      Event Title:                                  Health & Wellness in the LGBTQ Community

[Month Long Community Outreach]

Event Date/Time/Location:        05/04-28/09; Lincoln Park/Loop Student Centers[3]

Event Description:                      This outreach effort educates the DePaul community regarding varied LGBTQA-related mental health issues. Bulletin boards will provide weekly educational/informational on the affects of homonegativity on mental health, contributing factors to resiliency and gaining needed support, health and wellness resources, and identity development.  Resource tables to encourage proactive behaviors to maintain physical, emotional, and social health will complement the postings. 

 

3.      Event Title:                                  Toiletry Drive for the Broadway Youth Center

(BYC)

Event Date/Time/Location:        05/04-28/09; Lincoln Park/Loop Student Centers 

Event Description:                      Connected to DePaul’s mission of social justice, this outreach community (service) activity brings awareness to services offered within the community that may be relevant to current DePaul Students.  The drive will provide the Broadway Youth Center (BYC) with needed “wish list” items including: CTA cards, sample sized shampoo & conditioner, soap, lotion, toothbrushes, dental floss, deodorant, socks, and underwear.  The BYC, funded and operated in partnership with The Night Ministry and Children’s Memorial Hospital, is the youth program of Howard Brown Health Center, a health center serving the LGBTQ communities.  BYC offers free services including medical, sexual health testing, GED preparation, job training, case management, and therapy to youth under the age of 24, many of whom are homeless or have been homeless at some point in their lives.  Drop off boxes will be located in both Lincoln Park and Loop Student Centers and select Lincoln Park residences

                                   

4.      Event Title:                                  Beyond the Closet: Managing Identities, Making

Choices, and Engaging in Academic Life [Workshop]

Event Description:                      Developed for current DePaul undergraduate students, this academic advising workshop focuses on issues unique to many LGTBQA students as they choose majors, explore career options, navigate campus life and develop their sexual, political, & academic identities. Attending students will gain knowledge necessary for making informed and self-empowering academic decisions. 

 

5.      Event Title:                                  Trans Plantations [Reception & Performance]

Event Description:                      This provocative theatrical event brings award-winning lesbian playwright and screenwriter Janis Astor del Valle to DePaul University. Trans Plantations is a one-woman show written and performed by Astor del Valle and directed by Carolyn Kirsch. The play, which Astor del Valle performs in a straitjacket, explores her lifelong struggle with cultural and sexual identity as a New York-born lesbian Puerto Rican uprooted from her Bronx barrio and transplanted to rural Connecticut at age 7.

 

6.      Event Title:                                  Safe Zone Training

Event Description:                      These training-workshops are designed to visibly identify students, staff, and faculty peers who support DePaul’s LGBTQ community members, understand some of the issues facing LGBTQ individuals, and are aware of the various LGBTQ resources available at DePaul and beyond. The training provides a foundation of knowledge needed to be an effective ally to LGBTA students and those questioning their sexuality. 

 

7.      Event Title:                                  “Out and Proud in Chicago” Book Signing

Event Description:                      This book signing (promotional) event serves to link the evolving histories of DePaul’s LGBTQA communities to those of the greater Chicago area LGBTQA communities. Out and Proud in Chicago is an one-of-a-kind historical record of the LGBT culture in Chicago from the 19th century through the present.  The editor and several contributing authors will sign copies of the book and answer questions regarding the making of the book and the histories therein. Free to the public.

 

8.      Event Title:                                  OUT at Lunch

Event Description:                      OUT at Lunch is a program of the Office of LGBTQA Student Services.  It is a low-key programming effort for LGBTQ students and their allies to relax, have lunch, get acquainted, and make friends.  Empowerment, authenticity, and community, are themes that underscore these otherwise informal and social gathering.  Free to the public. 

 

9.      Event Title:                                  FunFunFun [Performance]

Event Date/Time/Location:        05/09/09; 7:00PM-8:30PM, Cortelyou Commons

Event Description:                      FunFunFun will be an experiential theatrical performance.  According to its student producers, if the audience hopes to enjoy their night to the fullest, they better be prepared to move around. Drawing inspiration from established companies such as New York’s Siti Company, Japan’s Chetlefitch, and Chicago’s Hypocrites this event will present an eclectic mix of song, dance, and text that invites the audience into collective fun.  FunFunFun will provide an opportunity for students of different races and sexual identities to generate and present original work in a creatively charged and open atmosphere. Free to the public.

 

10.  Event Title:                                  Gender Slip n’ Slide [Interactive Workshop]

Event Description:                      This workshop allows members of the DePaul University community to explore the definition of gender – both socially imposed and self-identified – and how it causes people to view themselves and others.  The workshop is an adaptation of Robyn Ochs’ work in the area of sexual identity.  Giving a space, and a voice, to those who wish to explore the many facets of gender, specifically as they are experienced by the LGBTQI[6] communities, supports DePaul’s mission and commitment to enhancing the diversity of its community. This is an interactive workshop consisting of three parts: (1) Gender 101 – a discussion about the definition of “gender;” (2) the Gender Exploration Exercise – an interactive exercise that involves a critical examination of one’s own gender over a span of time; and (3) Wrap-Up and Discussion to unpack the responses and patterns identified through the exercise. Free to the public.

 

11.  Event Title:                                  Crossdressing: Sex & Crossing Gender*

[Presentation-Discussion]

Event Description:                      This presentation on identity and personal history explores frank discussions of sexuality with David/Dana Turrentine, who has been a queer-identified male for more than 30 years. Broaching issues surrounding and facing members of the Cross-Dressing, Bondage and S&M Communities, this discussion presents a personal perspective and investigation into the qualities of self-definition of sexuality and the construction and alteration of gender identity. The idea of “crossing” as a fusion of genders or as the creation of a personal gender is discussed. Also constructions of Transvestite group identity, social sub-groups and community based organizations are discussed.  David/Dana inspires his audiences by sharing his own experiences as a transvestite and encouraging questioning and inquiries into social communities often considered as taboo subjects.

 

12.  Event Title:                                  Sex, Drugs, & Alcohol in the LGBTQ Community*

[Workshop-Discussion]

Event Description:                      Developed for DePaul’s undergraduate students, this workshop-discussion explores the connection between the use of substances and sexual activity among LGBTQ identified students. The goal of this discussion is to assist students make healthy and responsible decisions for both their immediate and long-term health and well-being. 

 

 

13.  Event Title:                                  Everything You Always Wanted to Know About

the Trans Community (But Were Afraid to Ask) [Panel Presentation-Discussion]     

Event Date/Time/Location:        05/13/09, 3:00PM-4:30PM, LPSC 314A/B

Event Description:                      This panel presentation will serve to educate the DePaul community regarding the diversity within the trans community.  Self-identified members of the trans community will share their life stores-who they are, how they live their lives, and how they are came to identify with the trans community-and take questions from the audience.  Through honest, open, respectful dialogue, this presentation hopes to dispel false notions and myths many people may have about the trans-identified individuals and the community they call their own.  The pane presentation is open to all members of the DePaul community.  Free to the public.

 

14.  Event Title:                                  Tal Como Somos: The Latino GBT Community

[Film & Discussion]   

Event Date/Time/Location:        05/1309; 5:00PM-7:00PM, LPSC 380

Event Description:                      This film screening and discussion examines the impact of stigma on Latino gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals as they navigate cultural waters that value religion, machismo, and family.  The film emerged from the Tal Como Somos outreach project developed by Dr. Jesus Ramirez-Valles of the University of Illinois at Chicago.  Dr. Ramirez-Valles has more than ten years of research experience in HIV and stigmatization among Latino gay men and transgender persons across North and South America.  More that a “coming out” film,  Tal Como Somos crafts an authentic portrait of seldom heard voices and unknown faces, introducing individuals whose lives and identities are normal and worthy of respect and acceptance.  Dr. Ramirez-Valles will serve as discussant for this event.  Free to the public.

 

15.  Event Title:                                  Domestic Violence in LGBTQ Communities

[Workshop-Discussion]

Event Description:                      This workshop is intended to explore the biases and barriers faced by LGBTQ individuals when trying to identify or escape intimate partner violence.  It is our goal to understand these concepts within the broader framework of a heterosexist society and how they affect individuals, partnerships, and community.

 

16.  Event Title:                                  Two Truths & A Lie [Performance-Discussion]

Event Date/Time/Location:        05/14/09; SAC[7] 154, 9:15PM

Event Description:                      This theatrical performance will educate the DePaul community about the realities of living life as a transgendered male.  Scott Turner Schofield’s presence will provide an excellent opportunity to foster diversity in DePaul’s community by furthering discussion about a community that is often overlooked, marginalized, or simply ignored.  This event serves to meet the organization goals of SAGA by helping to make DePaul a safer, more informed, and more accepting place for all students, regardless of gender identity or presentation.  Scott Turner Schofield’s three day visit includes classroom visits and a provocative educational theatrical performance.  During his first two days, Scott will speak to classes that have volunteered for this opportunity.  On his third night (May 14th), he will perform his one-man shows “Two Truths & A Lie.”  A Q&A session will follow this performance.  Free to the public.

 

17.  Event Title:                                  Blasphemies on Forever: Remembering Queer

Futures* [Performance-Reception]   

Event Date/Time/Location:        05/15/09, SAC 154 5:00PM-7:00PM

Event Description:                      This performance event is a solo multimedia piece, incorporating interactive and experimental video, sound, narrative, movement, music, humor, and dance. The content of the piece is an investigation of how gay male aging, gay male “youthism,” and the concept of the future are produced and negotiated within mainstream popular culture and gay cultural contexts. The piece is designed to trigger discussion and self-reflection about how popular discourses narrate, frame, and foreclose our narratives of what constitutes our understanding of future, what the future “should” be, and all the ways the future might potentially be. Through repeating motifs of Julia Roberts, 80s sitcoms, Freddy Krueger, Belinda Carlisle, and Molly Ringwald (to name a few), the piece asks the audience to contemplate and challenge restrictive ways of thinking about time, meaningful lives, the centrality of romance and procreation, and the violent meanings assigned to aging queer bodies. This will be a solo performance piece, in two thirty-minute acts, with an intermission. Free to the public.

 

18.  Event Title:                                  The T in LGBT: A Personal Odyssey from

Female to Male [Workshop-Discussion]

Event Date/Time/Location:        05/15/09; 6:00PM-9:00PM, Richardson Library Rosati Room[8]

Event Description:                      In this widely acclaimed, thought-provoking presentation, Dragonsani "Drago" Renteria and his partner, Jennifer Mantle, will help inform, educate and enlighten us on issues that affect transgender and transsexual individuals. Utilizing powerful images and healthy doses of humor, Drago will share his personal journey making the physical and cultural transition from female to male. Jennifer will share her perspective as the partner of a transman, lead us through issues of transphobia and educate us on how to be trans allies. This presentation is guaranteed to challenge the way you think about sex and gender!   Drago Renteria is a deaf, Chicano transman who is passionate about making a difference. A speaker in demand, Drago is adept at making his audiences feel at ease when discussing sensitive topics. Jennifer A. Mantle is an RID certified sign language interpreter, CI and CT. With her partner, Drago, she has presented nation-wide on her experiences as the partner of a Deaf transman of color.  Free to the public.

 

19.  Event Title                                   I'm a Gay Pastor [Discussion-Dinner]

Event Description:                      Developed by University Ministry this moderated discussion-dinner will address the intersection of spiritual-religious and LGBTQA identities.

 

20.  Event Title:                                  Bridging the Gap: A Conversation with Ronnie

Kroell  [Presentation-Discussion]                  

Event Date/Time/Location:        05/20/09; 12:00PM-2:00PM, LPSC 1st Fl. Atrium

Event Description:                      The purpose of this event is to share the journey of a fellow Chicagoan, from his community activism and work with many Chicago not for profit organizations, to the founding of his own non-profit, 4 + 1 Productions.  Many know Ronnie Kroell for his appearance on Make Me A Supermodel, but the focus of this event will be on his activism, commitment to social justice and equality, and well as his experiences in the entertainment industry as a gay male.  He will share the obstacles he has faced throughout his young life and how he has persevered.  The title of the event is Bridging the Gap, namely because of Ronnie’s devotion to bringing together the LGBTQ community and its Allies.  This event serves to help meet the mission of the Office of LGBTQA Student Services and DePaul University by validating and supporting the exploration of all career paths, while remaining committed to service.

22.  Event Title:                                  Exploring the Impact of Sexual Orientation and

Gender Identity on Career Exploration [Workshop]         

Event Date/Time/Location:        05/22/09; LPSC 380, 1:30PM-2:30PM

Event Description:                      The transition from campus life to the work force can have special implications for LGBTQ students and alumni. From targeting specific employers to deciding which activities to highlight on your resume and in interviews, sexual orientation and gender identity influence the career development of individuals in varying ways. Join us for a discussion about how sexual orientation and gender identity intersect with career exploration and the job search process.

 

23.  Event Title:                                  Dating and Healthy LGBTQA Relationships

[Workshop-Discussion]          

Event Date/Time/Location:        05/21/09, 5:30 PM- 6:45 PM, LPSC 380

Event Description:                      The purpose of this workshop-discussion is to provide support and psychoeduction to the DePaul community around LGBTQA specific relational issues, challenges, and concerns.  Discussion points include relationship resources in the LGBTQA community specific challenges posed by community stigma, queer relationship onto being recognized institutionally (i.e., reversal of proposition 8), absence or presence of family support and understanding, dating when both partners may not be “out” to friends, and family, and overall emotional concerns pertaining to LGBTQA relationships. 

 

24.  Event Title:                                  Queer View DePaul [Presentation-Community

Outreach]

Event Date/Time/Location:        05/23/09; 10:00AM-2:00PM; LPSC 325

Event Description:                      This community service-outreach activity will introduce self-identified LGBTQA high school students, high school counselors, and faculty advisors from Chicago area public, private, and religiously-affiliated high schools to the varied LGBTQ-focused academic and university resources (e.g., LGBTQ Studies and the Office of LGBTQA Student Services) available at DePaul University.  This event has three objectives: 1) help educate the overall college decision-making process of LGBTQA high school students, 2) provide these students, as well as the school professionals charged with guiding their academic achievement, with the information necessary to inform this decision process as its relate to DePaul University; and 3) as articulated in its Plan for Academic Achievement Vision Twenty12, help DePaul University “exceed national norms in recruiting, retaining and graduating a diverse student body.” Lunch will be provided.

           

25.  Event Title:                                  3rd Annual Stonewall Awards & Luncheon

Ceremony with Key Note Speaker Robert Garofalo, MD, MPH

Event Description:                      As the culminating event for the Annual LGBTQA Month, this event celebrates members of DePaul University’s LGBTQA communities for their efforts at making DePaul a truly welcoming and validating environment for LGBTQA individuals. Stonewall award recipients are community-nominated across various categories, including First Year Student, Graduating Student, Academic Program or Event, and Faculty and Staff member.  As in years prior, a single member of DePaul’s community will receive the Evelyn Hooker Award in acknowledgement of his/her/hir’s long-standing advocacy, service, and commitment to the needs, concerns, and interests of DePaul’s LGBTQ communities.  This year the luncheon will be highlighted with a key note address by Dr. Robert Garofalo, Deputy Director, Howard Brown Health Center; Attending physician, General Academic Pediatrics (Adolescent Medicine) Children’s Memorial Hospital; Associate professor of Pediatrics, Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine
