JOB TITLE: Graduate Assistant - Men of Color Initiative
SUPERVISOR: Assistant Director, Office of Multicultural Student Affairs
General Summary:
The Graduate Assistant reports to the Assistant Director of Multicultural Student Affairs. Through the Men of Color Initiative (MOC), the Graduate Assistant will work in developing programs, outreach initiatives and academic interventions that contribute toward the retention and graduation of males of color at DePaul University. The preferred candidate will have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher learning, and must be currently pursuing a Master’s degree at DePaul University. Some weekend and evening hours are required. Candidates who have been accepted for the Fall 2009 Academic Quarter will also be considered.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Assist the Assistant Director with the development and assessment of the MOC’s five content areas 1) Orientation and Summer Programming; 2) Academic and Career Development; 3) Social and Leadership Development; 4) Intergenerational Mentoring and Community Engagement; 5) Instruction and Assistance in Navigating the University’s Support System.
Assist in the supervision, development and training of 8 undergraduate project assistants.
Assist with the Academic Progress Reporting (APR) process and conduct Reaching for Academic Progress (RAP) sessions as needed.
Assist with the logistical planning and development of weekly meetings and monthly colloquiums with MOC participants.
Maintain strong communication with MOC participants through effective outreach methods.
Conduct research components and assessments that are critical toward retaining males of color in higher education.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree required from an accredited university.
Higher education experience.
Previous experience working with males of color is highly recommended.
Proven commitment to diversity.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Well developed managerial and organizational skills.
Must be currently pursuing a Master’s degree at DePaul University.
Hours/Schedule:
The MOC graduate assistant position is intended to be a yearlong appointment from (July 2009 – July 2010). Summer and winter breaks are negotiable. Work hours are 20-25 hours per week, served primarily Monday thru Friday. Some weekend and evening hours are required. In addition, the graduate assistant may be asked to host office hours at the Loop campus.
Compensation:
Stipend: $10,500.00 disbursed in equal bi-weekly payments over length of appointment
Educational Grant: 4 graduate credit hours per quarter for three quarters paid for by the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs.
